Photo or manual food logging: which is better?

Use the speed of photo logging and the control of manual entries together, while understanding the limits of nutrition estimates.

Choose the method you will actually use

A quick photo can make it easier to remember a meal. Manual logging gives you more control over ingredients and amounts. Both can be useful depending on the day. A consistent rough record may reveal more than a perfect record you can only keep for two days.

Review the estimates

A photo cannot reliably know every ingredient, serving size, oil, or sauce. Nutrition and fiber figures are estimates. Check the entry, adjust what you can, and add a note if there is something the image could not show.

Pair numbers with experience

If you are watching digestive symptoms, the food log is only half of the picture. Note when and how you felt, then look for recurring patterns. Avoid making a major restriction based on one estimated meal.
