The low FODMAP diet: what it is and what it is not

An introductory look at the temporary, three-step low FODMAP process for IBS and why reintroduction matters.

A structured approach for IBS

FODMAPs are certain carbohydrates that can be difficult to digest. A clinician may suggest a low FODMAP trial for some people with IBS. It is not a general-purpose cleanse or a default plan for anyone who feels bloated after lunch.

The NIDDK describes it as one possible dietary approach for IBS. Because restriction can make eating harder, work with a clinician or registered dietitian when considering it.

The reintroduction step matters

Monash University describes a three-step approach: a short low FODMAP phase, systematic reintroduction, and personalization. The goal is to learn which groups and amounts you tolerate, then broaden your diet accordingly. Staying in the strict phase indefinitely misses that goal.

Use tracking for context

If a professional recommends a trial, recording meals and symptoms can help you discuss the response and reintroduction. A general food tracker is not a substitute for a formal low FODMAP food guide or individualized care.
